“Uprooting, As Yesterday, 1922-2022”
AGOC 2022, Kos, August 30 – September 9, 2022
As part of the 2022 program of the institution “All of Greece One Culture – Anniversary of Remembrance – 100 Years Since the Asia Minor Catastrophe,” produced by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Office of Antiquities of the Dodecanese and the Municipality of Kos, and with the support of the Lions Club Kos “Hippocrates” and the Municipal Channel of Kos, we presented a two-week puppet seminar (August 30 – September 9, 2022) for teenagers titled “Uprooting, As Yesterday, 1922-2022,” which culminated in two performances on September 10 & 11 at the Roman Odeon of Kos.
Through the creation of a video, we revisited the historical events of 1922, the Cyprus issue of 1974, and expanded into the modern refugee crisis as a result of the wars in Syria and Ukraine. During the two weeks, the children learned to construct puppets from paper and saw them come to life in front of their eyes and articulate speech. They learned to animate them and set up small improvisations depicting the lives of people before the war, their lives after the outbreak of the war, the journey, settling in a new place, and finally, their reception by the local community, scenes which they presented to the audience at the Roman Odeon.
The production was part of the 2022 program of the institution “All of Greece One Culture” by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
